Worship At SHUMC

At Southern Hills we gather to worship in community to exalt the Father through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. We present God's living Word in order to make relevant God's message in our everyday lives. We strive to make worship meaningful and expressive through well-planned liturgy, scripture, preaching, singing, and musical instruments. We are intentional about incorporating the visual and performing arts to exemplify the Spirit of Christ, His life and teachings.

• Altar Guild: Volunteers prepare the altar and sanctuary for worship every Sunday and for special worship services during Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. Contact Sandra Jackson at 278-2730 or email

• Usher Guild: Men and women volunteer to usher each Sunday at one of two services and for special services throughout the year. Contact Bill Hodges at 277-5960 or Dave Deaton at 223-9823 or Dennis Liptrap at 233-1737

• Acolytes: Children and youth in grades 3-8 are encouraged to serve as acolytes for Sunday morning worship and for special worship services. Acolytes are trained in the ancient Christian tradition of lighting the altar candles, placing the Holy Bible on the lectern, reverencing the cross, and tolling the bell for the start of worship. • Communion Stewards: For adults preparing Holy Communion sacraments of juice and wafers for congregants 8 times per year. Contact Patti Lester at 223-5831 or Bob Sigman at 223-2719.  Also, weekly assignments for those who wish to serve open communion in the Prayer Chapel each week from 10:40 AM to 10:55 AM. • Lay Readers: For adults, children and youth. Volunteers read scripture lessons and lead responsive readings for Sunday morning worship throughout the year. Contact Natalie Wilson at 277-4680.
