Southern Hills United Methodist Church

Health and Wellness Ministry

"The Lord will guide you always... you will be like a well watered garden." Isaiah 58:11

As the body of Christ, we promote wellness of mind, body & spirit to carry out God's work.

The Health and Wellness group meets the third Thursday of each month in the Reception Room at 6:30 pm.  All are welcome to attend--you don't have to be a Health Professional to be a part of our ministry.  Call Janey Wendschlag at 881-3046 or the church office for more info.

It’s time to get moving

Do you need more energy or better health? Well then lace up your sneakers and get moving.  Regular physical activity has many positive benefits and is one of the most important things you can do for your health.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lists the following health benefits of regular physical activity:

• “Control your weight
• Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease
• Reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
• Reduce your risk of some cancers
• Strengthen your bones and muscles
• Improve your mental health and mood
• Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls, if you're an older adult
• Increase your chances of living longer”

To increase activity in your lifestyle, start slowly and gradually increase your daily activity. If you have a chronic health condition, consult your primary care provider prior to starting a new routine.  Your doctor can help you to decide on an activity plan that suites your abilities.  Remember everyone can gain benefits from increased activity.

Wellness Tip

    Upcoming Events

With the uncertainty of the upcoming flu season, help protect your families by following some common sense procedures.

• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• Wash your hands frequently
• Stay home from work or school as soon as you begin to experience flu-like symptoms such as:
o Fever greater than 100.4 F
o Cough
o Sore throat
o Runny or stuffy nose
o Body aches
o Headache
o Chills
o Fatigue
o Diarrhea and vomiting has also been reported with H1N1 (Swine flu)

These simple steps can help contain the spread of the common flu as well as H1N1 flu. It is important to consider taking the seasonal flu vaccine. Speak with your health care provider if you have concerns about taking the flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) expects the separate immunization for H1N1  flu will be available in October.  The supply of this vaccine may be limited and offered to people with the highest risk first. For up to date information about Influenza, (seasonal or H1N1) flu go to: http://www.cdc.gov/

There will be a Blood Pressure Screening on Sunday, February 7th from 9:00-12:00.

The Health and Wellness Ministry Team has organized an enthusiastic group to participate in Community Charity Walks and represent Southern Hills at these events. We would love to have you join us at one or any of the walks!  If you have any questions, please contact Julie Hatton at  230-8563 or Janey Wendschlag at 881-3046.
